About Us

Who We Are

The Magic Wheelchair Basketball Team is a member of the FWBC (Florida Wheelchair Basketball Conference) and the NWBA (National Wheelchair Basketball Association). The NWBA is starting its fifty-fifth season and the FWBC is in its seventh year.

Our Purpose

The Magic Wheels provide an opportunity for athletes with lower limb impairment to play the sport they love in a competitive enviroment.

Objectives

  • To educate the public as to the nature of disabilities and remove the apathy surrounding the physically disabled
  • To promote awareness of the dedication and accomplishments of wheelchair athletes
  • To promote Wheelchair Basketball as the true sport it is, thereby increasing fan support and enjoyment

How To See The Game Played

Regular season games are played at the conference level locally and in tournament play all around the country (USA). Post-season play includes regional and final four events. Locally the Magic Wheels play at area schools and church facilities.

    Magic Wheels At A Glance

  • Formed in 1994-95 season and posted 10-11 regular season record
  • During the past seven years they have consistently been in the top 10 of Division 2 teams
  • Have hosted invitational tournaments and have been awarded post season site selection

    Wheelchair Basketball Facts

    The Sport
Wheelchair Basketball has the largest number of participants of any sport in the wheelchair sport family and is highly developed throughout the United States. Participants are offered the opportunity to compete in structured enviroments at developmental, competitive, and elite levels. The season starts in September and finishes in late March.

    Wheelchair Basketball Officials

Wheelchair basketball games are very competitive, and the officials are just as important to the game as high school, college, or NBA referees. NWBA officials are NOT volunteers, they are paid for their expertise, as are many officials of a competitive sport.

To officiate in the NWBA, a referee must first be a licensed and active official in his or her own state association.

To advance to post season play, a referee must be approbated, that is instructed, observed and deemed qualified, by two other NWBA officials, plus they must pass an annual exam.

For International Competition, a referee must be nominated by his country, and pass the IWBF (International Wheelchair Basketball Federation) written and physical exams.

If you would like more information about becoming an NWBA certified referee, please contact Roger Davis at 407.654.4315 or email <mailto:davis4nwba@aol.com>Davis4NWBA@aol.com

    Sponsorship

The Magic WHeels are cosponsored by RDV Sports/Orlando Magic and Florida Hospital Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. Representatives of each entity meet monthly to plan community events and monitor the progress of the team and its activities.

    Fund-raising Opportunities

The Magic Wheels offer youth clubs and other not-for-profit organizations fund-raising opportunities. School clubs, cheerleader squads, etc. are encourged to contact the Magic Wheels for details on how they can help your group raise funds.

    Volunteer Opportunities

The Magic Wheels are in need of community volunteers in a number of positions including apprentice coaches, concession staff and score table personnel.

    Why Wheelchair Basketball

Wheelchair Basketball is a source of self-fulfillment and motivation to many individuals who wish to be an active part of the sports community. It is a vehicle for people who have physical disabilities to participate and compete on a level playing field. The sport provides exercise, physical fitness, and competitive opportunities for disabled athletes.

    Magic Wheels Summer Program

For eight weeks during the summer, the Magic Wheels host a summer wheelchair basketball program. One night a week all interested players are invited to attend a two-hour session. Divisions are available for beginners, intermediate, advanced, juniors, men, and women. This program is available at no charge to the participants.

    Magic Wheels

The Wheels are just one extension of the Magic's vision to be the sports model of the Twenty-first Century. Through a partnership with Florida Hospital Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, the team participates in community service and competition throughout the year. They promote and increase disability awareness issues throughout Central Florida as a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. Now in its ninjth season, the Magic Wheels squad plays against other National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) members locally and nationally, including those affiliated with other NBA teams.

The NWBA season runs from September through March and includes a playoff tournament. The Magic Wheels will also play two exhibition games during half-time for the Magic home games. For additional information about games or appearances, contact Magic Wheels directly at 407.654.4315 or the Orlando Magic Community Relations Department at 407.916.2644.

    Magic Wheels History

The Magic Wheels was formed in 1994, when the Florida Hospital and the Orlando Magic decided to jointly sponsor a wheelchair basketball team. The Magic Wheels played in the NWBA (National Wheelchair Basketball Association) as an independent Team. The following year the Wheels helped revive and joined the FWBC (Florida Wheelchair Basketball Conference), which is currently comprised of the Miami Heat Wheels, Tallahassee Tornados, St. Petersburg Thunder, University of Florida Gator Wheels, and the Orlando Magic Wheels.

During the next several years the team played a conference schedule, hosted home tournaments and traveled to away tournaments around the country. The interest in and number of participants grew and the Magic Wheels Organization now serves 30 to 40 athletes per season.

In 1997 the Magic Wheels Web site was launched at www.magicwheels.com Web administrator and player Cesar Hernandez has volunteered his time and expertise to this effort.

The Magic Wheels have consistently been ranked in the top 10 teams in the country and have progressed to the Regional level of post-season play each year. The goal is to make it to the Final Four and win a National Championship.

Any individual male or female, with a lower limb impairment which includes but is not limited to paralysis at mid chest and below the waist, knee surgeries which prohibit the ability to jump, above the knee or below the knee amputation, partial foot amputation, spina-bifida, post-polio syndrome, fused ankles, and club foot interested in the sport of wheelchair basketball is encouraged to contact the Magic Wheels at 407.654.4315 or email mpdavisrn@aol.com
